Distinguished wood engraver Anne Desmet presents a series of journeys through time. These recent prints and mixed media collages will take you to New York, London and an imaginary beyond, exploring the tones and textures of changing seasons, times of day and layers of history. The exhibition will include the first showing of a new series of six engravings, Manhattan, based on the Chrysler Building in New York City.
Liverpool-born Anne Desmet studied at the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford University, and was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Printmaking by the Central School of Art and Design, London. She teaches wood engraving widely, particularly at the Royal Academy Schools. In 2011, Desmet was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts, only the third wood engraver ever elected to the RA in its entire history.
This is Anne Desmet’s second solo exhibition at the Holburne, following Towers & Transformations in 1999. The artist’s intricately detailed engravings and minute, spellbinding collaged fragments recall the finest of Sir William Holburne’s tiny treasures and Grand Tour souvenirs.
