Natural History: Melanie Miller

4 February - 6 March 2015

Miller paints in an idyllic studio on an island in the Thames, the seemingly bucolic nature of the paintings is underscored by a toughness, the layers of paint and gesso built up and removed sometimes leaving traces of something before. In Miller’s works the indigenous nature of the subjects is important; they are not exotic but accessible, familiar yet powerful placed in their ambiguous dark spaces.
