Well known for his imagined landscapes Long & Ryle presents David Wightman’s new show ‘My Atalanta’.

A continuation from his successful ‘Empire’ exhibition in 2016, Wightman pushes the intensity of colour and playfulness of composition further in his latest series of paintings and prints. Wightman’s imagined landscapes pay homage to classical painters who also constructed their own landscape on the canvas, whilst retaining his utterly unique style. He invites you to step into his own version of an archetypal landscape, something “idealised and impossible” [David Wightman, 2016].

Wighman’s practice collages meticuluously hand-cut wallpaper, a technique similar to marquetry, onto canvas. Each painting is painstakingly collaged, crafted, and painted over a period of several weeks. Wightman uses intense colours to animate the depths of his mountains-scapes: “the colours have evolved to being brighter because I find them more attractive, more inticing” [Wightman, 2020].

'My Atalanta' is Wightman’s second exhibition with Long & Ryle since his previous show 'Empire' four years ago. Featuring a selection of paintings in a myriad of sizes, alongside his latest series of prints and drawings.
