David Wightman is known for his brightly coloured, imaginary landscape paintings and prints. Wightman uses acrylic and collaged wallpaper on canvas to construct intricate and powerful landscapes.
David Wightman was born in Stockport, Greater Manchester in 1980. He studied Fine Art at Middlesex University and gained an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art, London.
Wightman’s paintings reinvent the genre of landscape painting using a personal and intimate approach. Each imaginary mountainscape is created from a combination of collaged wallpaper and acrylic paint using a technique similar to marquetry.
Each of Wightman’s paintings refers to the tradition of landscape painting. He uses a variety of sources as inspiration – from postcards to classical landscape paintings. The result is a collection of sublime and archetypical beautiful landscapes that are familiar yet fictional.
